Coagulation is necessary for the removal of colloidal sized suspended matter. COAGULANTS Common coagulant chemicals used are alum, ferric sulphate, ferric chloride, ferrous sulphate, and sodium aluminate.
Flocculation requires careful attention to the mixing velocity and amount of mix energy. To prevent the floc from tearing apart or shearing, the mixing velocity and energy input are usually tapered off as the size of the floc increases. In flocculation, a period of less intense mixing is used to promote the aggregation of destabilized particles into larger flocs that can be removed subsequently by sedimentation and/or filtration.

Tube settlers increase the settling capacity of circular clarifiers and/or rectangular sedimentation basins by reducing the vertical distance. The floc particles would settle before agglomerating to form larger particles. The settlers use multiple tubular channels sloped at an angle of 60° and adjacent to each other, which combine to form an increased effective settling area. This provides for a particle settling depth that is significantly less than the settling depth of a conventional clarifier, reducing settling times. Tube settlers capture the settle able fine floc that escapes the clarification zone beneath the tube settlers and allows the larger floc to travel to the tank bottom in a more settle able form.
Raw water enters the primary reaction zone through the inlet into the recirculation drum. Coagulating chemicals may be added in the influent pipe near the point of entry into the recirculation drum. Additional treatment chemicals may also be added in this pipe or directly into the reaction well.
In the recirculation drum, initial mixing and reaction take place in the presence of previously formed floc. The chemicals and recirculated sludge are thoroughly mixed with the raw water by large volume turnover accomplished by the turbine. Further mixing and contact take place in the secondary reaction zone within the reaction well cone, where flocculation is carried to completion in the presence of large quantities of recirculating floc and solids. This treatment ensures thorough chemical mixing and complete floc and precipitates development.
